Glossary
Abnormal - Not normal, average, typical, or usual.
Aluminium Oxide - A white or colourless insoluble powder occurring naturally as corundum and used in the production of aluminium and its compounds, abrasives, glass, and ceramics.
Bauxite - A rock consisting of aluminium oxides and hydroxides with various impurities: the principle ore of aluminium.
Characteristics - A distinguishing feature or quality.
Chemist - A specialist in chemistry.
Discerned - To distinguish mentally; recognize as distinct or different; discriminate.
Extract - To get, pull, or draw out, usually with special effort, skill, or force.
Impurities - The quality or state of being impure.
Inexpensive - Not expensive; not high in price; costing little.
Iron - A ductile, malleable, silver-white metallic element, scarcely known in a pure condition, but much used in its crude or impure carbon-containing forms for making tools, implements, machinery, etc. Symbol: Fe.
Manufacture/ Manufacturing - The making of goods or wares by manual labor or by machinery, especially on a large scale.
Manufacturers - A person, group, or company that owns or runs a manufacturing plant.
Mass produce/ Mass produced - To produce or manufacture (goods) in large quantities, especially by machinery.
Ore - A metal-bearing mineral or rock, or a native metal, that can be mined at a profit.
Oxide - A compound in which oxygen is bonded to one or more electropositive atoms.
Patent - The exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an invention for a certain number of years.
Physicist - A scientist who specializes in physics.
Plentiful - Existing in great plenty.
Pollution - The act of polluting or the state of being polluted.
Primary - First or highest in rank or importance.
Refined - Freed from impurities.
Resultant - That results; following as a result or consequence.
Scientist - An expert in science, especially one of the physical or natural sciences.
Scrutinised - To examine in detail with careful or critical attention.
Silica - The dioxide form of silicon, SiO 2 , occurring especially as quartz sand, flint, and agate: used usually in the form of its prepared white powder chiefly in the manufacture of glass, water glass, ceramics, and abrasives.
Solid waste stream - The total flow of solid waste from homes, businesses, institutions, and manufacturing plants that are recycled, burned, or disposed of in landfills, or segments thereof such as the “residential waste stream” or the “recyclable waste stream.”
Titania - (Otherwise known as titanium dioxide) A white, water-insoluble powder, TiO 2, used chiefly in white pigments, plastics, ceramics, and for delustering synthetic flowers.
