What led to the discovery of aluminium foil?
There are many people whom contributed to the discovery of aluminium foil, the first being Hans Christian Oersted (a Danish physicist and chemist). He had discovered aluminium in 1825, and was the first to show actual samples of the foil. Next in the line of contributors is a German scientist, Freidrich Wohler. What he did was a crucial part of aluminium foil history. He was able to produce bigger samples and because of this the basic characteristics of the metal could be discerned. Lastly was Henry Deville, a French chemist, whom (in 1854) had developed the process to mass produce it, but the foil proved to be too expensive for practical use.
There was also another inventor (an Australian scientist, Karl Joseph Bayer) who, in 1888, came up with the means to extract aluminium oxide from bauxite. His method is still being used to this day, and that is no surprise since the method was such a success.
